About The Cups and Balls
I learned Cups and Balls magic very late in my magical journey. For many magicians it is the first trick they learn when they get their first magic kit at 8 years old. Me? I think I was in my 40s, lol. It incorporates many many practices and techniques that magicians use for an abundance of routines and that is why it is so important to master these cups and balls.
I felt I had to learn it because it is the world’s oldest magic trick. The great magician Ricky Jay used to say that hieroglyphics of a magician performing cups and balls was painted on the walls of the ancient pyramids thousands of years ago. It is said that it is the test for magicians to see if they can truly call themselves professionals.
MIne is a very inexpensive set made of solid copper. I think I paid $25 bucks for them. As you can see they are well used now and quite tarnished. Professionals and collectors pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars for sets that are hand crafted or made with precious metals.
After watching a youtube video of Dai Vernon appearing on an old black and white TV show performing his routine, I was determined to learn how to do it. So I purchased a master class video 2 part series from the late great Daryl. These videos were super informative and worth every penny! I studied and replayed the classes over and over as I put together my own cups and balls routine.
My routine is very much inspired by Daryl and Dai and of course it's very... Sharpo. When I work live with it I do lots of chatter and patter and I always get a nice crowd around me for this one but here I am mostly just practicing so I don’t say much - and if you know me you know that is rare! I included an older video with some patter too.
